The oxidized sterling silver is a handmade finish created by a chemical reaction that occurs to blacken sterling silver when it is dipped in a special chemical.  By polishing the oxidized metal, a gleaming gunmetal finish is achieved.  The finish is not created by leaving the silver out to tarnish naturally.  That does not create a pleasing finish.  If you keep polishing a textured section, such as chain wire wrapped onto other wire, such as chain in these earrings, you can create a finish whereby the raised wire gleams as bright silver contrasting to the darker color in the crevices of the wire wrapping.  This is a very popular finish, and it can be varied to personal preference
