Opals
Every opal contains a universe. No other gemstone holds so many colors at once — flash red, then gold, then violet, then green, all within a single stone, all shifting with every tilt of the wrist.

THE STONE
Opal’s legendary “play of color” is caused by light diffracting through microscopic silica spheres within the stone — producing flashes that shift and dance as the stone moves.
At Doolittle, we work primarily with Ethiopian opals, prized for their intense, full-spectrum flash and their glassy, transparent quality that makes the color appear to float inside the stone like a living flame.
No two opals flash exactly the same way. Each stone is a one-of-a-kind optical event.
THE COLLECTION
Every opal piece here is built around a stone chosen for the quality and breadth of its color play.
You’ll find opal earrings and necklaces that pair these extraordinary stones with labradorite, sapphire, pearl, and mixed metals — creating designs that feel as complex and layered as the stones themselves.
Most pieces are one of a kind. When a stone is gone, it cannot be replaced with an identical one.
